Le verbe être (Indicatif présent)

Indicatif présent de être, to be
être is an important verb in French language. The conjugation of être is:


singulier                                                               Pluriel
Je suis      I am                                                  Nous sommes   We are
Tu es        You are                                             Vous etes           You are
Il est         He(it) is                                            Ils sont              They are (Masculin)
Elle est     She (it) is                                         Elles sont           They are (Feminin)

Note:

  •  Il means "he" when referring to a person of masculine gender
  •  Il means "it" when referring to a thing of masculine gender
  •  Elle means "she" when referring to a person of feminine gender  
  •  Elle means "it" when referring to a thing of feminine gender
  • Ils means "they" which is the pronoun subject referring to persons or things masculine
  • Elles means "they", the pronoun subject referring to persons or things feminine.
Examples:

1) Où est le garçon?  - Il est dans la salle de classe
          Where is the boy? - He is in the classroom
               
2) Où est le livre?  - Il est sur la table                 
     Where is the book? - It is on the table.           

3)  Où  estl fille?- Elle est dans la salle
    Where is the girl? - She is in the class
     
4) Où sont le garçon et la fille? - Ils sont dans la salle de classe
     Where are the boy and the girl? - They are in the classroom

5) Où sont le livre et le stylo?  -  Ils sont sur la table
     Where are the book and the pen? - They are on the table

Les prépositions de pays

Devant les noms de ville, on utilise à                Exemple: Vous habitez à Bruxelles Devant les noms de pays, on utilise au pour les pays masculins et aux   pour les pays au pluriel. Exemple: Vous travaillez au Canada. Vous allez aux États- Unis. Devant les noms de pays, on utilise en pour les pays feminins et ceux qui commence par une voyelle. Exemple: Je vais en France et en Italie cet été. Pour indiquer une provence, on utilise le verbe venir de. Exemple: Vous venez du Mali. Vous venez de Suisse.
